CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup |
The draw for the 2022-2023 Total Energies CAF inter club competitions Preliminary Rounds was earlier conducted today the 9th of August in Cairo, Egypt at 16h00 local time.
The Nigerian Professional Football League had earlier produced four teams to represent them in the continent of Africa, Rivers United who had won the league and Plateau United who finished second represents the country in the CAF Champions league.
On the other hand, Remo Stars FC who had won promotion to the Nigerian Professional Football League in the just concluded season, did well to finished third on the log including Kwara United who followed suite to represent the league in the second tier club competition in Africa.
And the draws for the 2022/2023 CAF Champions League - Preliminary Round were as follows;
◾Rivers Utd vs Watanga FC (Liberia).
Winner will face defending Champions, Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco) for a place in Group Stage.
◾Plateau Utd vs AS Stade Mandji (Gabon).
Winner will face Esperance (Tunisia) for a place in Group Stage.
First leg of all the matches will hold within the weekend of 9-11 September and second leg set for 16-18 September
Second round will hold between 7-9 and 14-16 October, respectively.
On the other hand, the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup - Preliminary Round draws were as follows;
◾Kwara Utd vs AS Douanes (Niger).
The winner will face RS Berkane (Morocco) in the second round.
◾Remo Stars vs ASFAR (Morocco).
If Remo progress they will face the winner between AAGBS (Guinea) & Nouakchott CS (Mauritania).
The CAF Confederations Cup begins on September 9th.
Rivers who didn’t make it past the second round in their last outing of the CAF Champions league, will be counting on the confidence boost gotten from their first league title win to advance to the group stage this time around.
Nigerian teams performance in previous years in these club continental show down, hasn't been impressive at all, and looking at this present draws it doesn't seem to look a stroll in the park for the Nigerian teams.
The more reason why all the management of these NPFL teams must put their house in order and do the needful, if they're to make it pass this stage to the group stage.
