Ex Milan President, Berlusconi Risen From Ashes with Monza: Facts you should know about AC Monza

AC Monza for the first time in their history has gained promotion to the top Italian division ie Serie A for the 2022/23 season. The new side will be the 69th different club to play in Serie A. 

The Lombardy team Monza defeated Pisa 4-3 in their promotional playoff, after extra time on Sunday to secure a 6-4 goal aggregate victory. Fellow rival sides Lecce and Cremonese had already secured their top flights tickets in the regular season.


HOW IT STARTED

The club successes were as a result of acquisition and huge investment into the Serie C former side in 2018 by former Italian Prime Minister FininVest Group.

The club is currently owned by former AC Milan president, Silva Berlusconi in 2017, Berlusconi sold his share in Milan for €723 million and bought the little l club AC Monza for just €2.9 million. 

Berlusconi bought AC Monza while they were in the Italian top tier. He made his brother Paolo Berlusconi the president and brought on board long term collaborator and friend Adriano Galliani, they both won 29 trophies with AC Milan between 1986 and 2016. 

INVESTMENT PAYS A LOT

The taken over AC Monza, Berlusconi has significantly invested an estimate of €70 million, which is crucially important for their promotional successes. These investment funds played a vital role to get the team from the third tier to the SERIE A.

In Berlusconi's media chat with media, he told Sky Sport Italia "we fought for a year and reached a Historic milestone. Monza since established in 1912 had never been in the Serie A. We got there today. It is a wonderful thing for all the citizens of Brianza"
