Did Super Eagles Peter OgheneroEtebo live up to expectations at Watford?

Following the promotion of Watford back to the Premier League on the 24th of April, 2021 under the tutelage of Spanish gaffer Xisco Muñoz, this would prompt the acquisition of several players by the club management so as to beef up the squad ahead of the 2021/22 season.

One of those players brought in by Xisco Muñoz was Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Peter Etebo signed on a season long loan deal from parent club Stoke City with an option to buy in the summer of 2021.

On hearing this news football fans across Nigeria were optimistic about the former Warri Wolves man, that he'll help shore up things in the middle of the park alongside Imran Louza and Tom Cleverley.

The Warri born midfielder started brightly as he made his competitive debut for the Hornet in their league opener against Aston Villa, where he perfectly orchestrated things in the middle of the park, won defensive battle and made excellent tackles.

But along the line some factors played out as to why the former CD Feirense midfielder didn't live up to the billing at Watford.

Etebo's Injury Woes

Etebo's impressive debut in their Premier League opener against Aston Villa won the heart of many Watford fans, and he was touted as an integral member of the team as the season progressed.

But after suffering a serious quad muscle injury against Newcastle in September 2021, which saw him spend five months on the sidelines, this really affected him as he experienced dip in form.

As a result of his injury lay off Etebo was only restricted to making 10 appearances for the Hornet throughout the season, while accumulating 487 minutes of play.Watford Midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo Injured against Newcastle last year September.

The Moussa Sissoko's Arrival

Moussa Sissoko's arrival from Tottenham wouldn't go well for Etebo, as during his injury lay offs the Frenchman solidified his place in the middle of the park alongside Tom Cleverley and Moroccan star Imran Louza.

This would mean that even after Etebo had returned from injury he'll have to fight his way back to the team, but sadly he fell down the pecking order behind the Frenchman.

Oghenekaro Peter Etebo's time at Watford wasn't indeed a memorable and fantastic one as fans envisaged when he had signed for the English side, as eventually he was relegated alongside his team to the championship.

And following the closure of the 2021/22 England Premier League season, he was shortlisted amongst the list of five players had released following their relegation to the Skybet championship.
